Spanish Expert Álvaro Ribalta Joins Institute of Masters of Wine
There's a new Spanish Master of Wine: Álvaro Ribalta MW. He obtained this prestigious title after completing the rigorous curriculum, which included a research paper. In this case, Ribalta studied sparkling wines made using the traditional method in the Penedès region of Catalonia.
Originally from Barcelona, he has been living in London since 2006. Although he originally studied mechanical engineering, one day he decided to take the plunge and travel north with plans to learn English. While working as a waiter, he started to learn more about wine and ended up enrolled in the WSET courses.
Álvaro Ribalta MW started working in the industry and, in 2014, he joined Indigo Wines, which imports a carefully-curated selection from small producers in Spain. Since 2018, he has been responsible for the company's business development.
If there's one thing Ribalta has learned over the course of his studies it’s the importance of humility. "The wine world is very extensive and there are countless experts in different areas; however, if you have the drive, you can learn something new every day," according to spanishwinelover.com.
He joins the ranks of other Masters of Wine from Spain, such as Fernando Mora, Almudena Alberca, and Pedro Ballesteros.
As for the future of Spanish wine in international markets, Álvaro Ribalta MW has his own opinion, saying "We have a great product, variety and quality, but we need to be taken more seriously." Perhaps he can do something to further boots Spanish wine's image abroad.
